8 TAKEAWAYS ON TEACHING FOR CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH FOR LIFE (CEFL) - WAS IT MEMORABLE?
by AliahMazli |
In 2017, after I graduated from my Degree in Applied Language (English for Professional Communication), I worked with Cambridge English for Life (CEFL) as a Language Instructor/Teacher (I worked there for 2 years - 2017 to 2018).
Here are some of the takeaways/skills that I have learned:
1) Met with incredible leader with astounding leadership, my manager. She's the one who knew about my potential and polished them up for me to be who I am today where she will throw rocks at you but will lift you up higher. She's a knowledge giver and you can ask her whatever that you want to know at any hour and that shows her commitment to her work. I was so blessed to have worked with her and to learn from various aspects; teaching, management and communication.
2) Amazing colleagues who were selfless in sharing knowledge, had active discussions in establishing ideas to help the children engage and have fun in learning English.
3) Time Management - I learned that teaching isn't just about teaching the children. It took hours of preparation in researching for the materials, analyzing which worksheets work with certain students taking into consideration of their English level. It' s a lot of hard work and sacrifices that need to be done.
4) Presentation skills - To be able to stand for 2 hours each class and deliver the lessons and to make sure that everyone learn something are not easy. I learned how to reach the students with the right tone, facial expressions & body language & use examples that suits the students and the contents of the topic.
5) Emotional Control - Dealing with children and adults simultaneously takes high courage in maintaining and controlling your emotion and setting a positive mindset the moment you set foot into the class helps a lot.
6) Writing Skills/Reading - It is a profession that requires you to be a life-long learner with endless writing and reading to do. English language is a skill and a skill needs to be maintained and polished from time to time.
7) Social skills/Interpersonal Skill - I love this the most as I deal with the management, the teachers, the children and the parents simultaneously and it has level up my skill in communication and to be able to code-switch accordingly is something that I applaud myself for.
8) Achievements/Proud Moments - I would cry and be the happiest person on earth if my students showed good results, mastered the topic, showed improvements even though they took a longer route than others. Money can't buy that. The letters that they gave me during my last day of teaching were something that I'll cry over again if I were to read them.
Why only for 2 years there? I decided to go for Professional Communication, in writing or any field related to that, as well as furthering my Master's Degree in 2019.
So to the question:
